Assessment of anorexia nervosa.jpg

This is a substantial revision of a previous module by Dr Harry Millar. The authors acknowledge his contribution.

This module gives an introduction to the assessment of adult bulimia nervosa.

First, the epidemiology of bulimia nervosa is outlined as well as the challenges for patients presenting to primary care.

We then go on to describe standard diagnostic criteria for eating disorders along with other important physical and psychological characteristics of bulimic disorders. Comprehensive assessment, medical risks, risk assessment and physical examination are discussed.

Finally, treatment approaches, the assessment of motivation to change and how to increase food intake are explored.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of this module, you should be able to:

  • describe the epidemiology of bulimia nervosa
  • outline how someone might present to their GP and the challenges they might face
  • demonstrate how to perform a comprehensive assessment
  • highlight what to cover in risk assessment
  • list the treatment options.
