The UK Government’s official position is that the NHS is broken. Our contention is that the NHS is not broken, but it is traumatised. Calderon de la Barca et al (2024) recently argued that, as the case for an individual, our best chance of healing a traumatised system like the NHS is through the power of relationships.

This session will give a detailed account of the first year of a programme which is trying to do something never attempted on this scale before - achieve a Culture of Care on our inpatient wards in England. Working with over 200 wards across all 60 providers of inpatient care in England, and over 100 executives from those organisations, the innovative approach brings together high levels of lived experience leadership and co-production, a systematic approach to quality improvement, the development of a national learning community of thousands of staff and patients, and compassionate and relational approaches to care, taken from the Open Dialogue model.

We will reflect on the response from the sector, learning so far and what the data shows about our impact. It is a unique opportunity to hear about and input into a landmark programme in England at its halfway point.

What people will gain:

People will gain an understanding of the innovative approach being taken to culture change in mental health services and learning from both data and insights and reflections from those leading different aspects of the work.

Learning objectives

In this session you will:

  • Develop understanding of the innovative approach being taken to culture change
  • Explore how the different elements of the programme delivery are impacting the wards we are working with
  • Learn about the outcomes so far from the Culture of Care programme
  • Gain insights into strategies that they could take to their own services and culture change.
