Overview

It remains unclear whether mental health inpatient care for young people (aged 13-17 years) is clinically or cost effective, or indeed may even have an adverse impact. Around one-quarter of General Adolescent Unit (GAU) admissions are out-of-area or far-from-home, resulting in additional stress for young people and families, risking longer lengths of stay and making care coordination more challenging for clinicians. Some young people continue to be admitted to adult wards. The NIHR-funded “Far Away from Home” multi-methods national study has investigated the scale, impact and costs of these admissions, working closely with young people, parents/carers and a professionals (including commissioners) advisory group throughout the study.

We are a group of clinically-active academic psychiatrists and we will present and share:

  • findings from the RCPsych CAPSS surveillance study which has investigated the scale, characteristics and outcomes of far-from-home, out-of-area or adult ward admissions
  • knowledge gained through interviews (n=118) with a national sample of young people, parents/carers, CAMHS & AMHS clinicians, and commissioners
  • insights gained around optimising inpatient care provision and potential alternatives, including crisis care and alternatives to admission
  • new research focusing on Strengthening Crisis Team Provision for Young People via Technology-enhanced Assessment and Training (the SCriPT study).
Learning Objectives
  • To share new knowledge and insights gained from service-facing research.
  • To stimulate discussion around alternative care models and practices in relation to the assessment and management of young people who may be referred for inpatient care.
  • To consider the barriers and facilitators related to their implementation.
