Because of the special nature of mental disorder, psychiatrists, in their efforts to prevent and alleviate mental suffering, assume a role of unusual significance in their patients’ lives and in society. Even more than other physicians, psychiatrists may be called on to use their own values, life experiences, communication abilities and human relatedness in addition to their clinical knowledge and judgment to help their patients. They often explore highly sensitive personal information and confront very difficult, disturbing issues of great consequence to their patients.
