Symptoms of hoarding are found in many psychiatric conditions ranging from dementia, ADHD and through to the more recently recognised hoarding disorder. Despite being a common problem, hoarding is arguably one of the most highly stigmatised, unrecognised and trivialised conditions. Despite resulting in deaths and considerable morbidity, shame experienced by the individual as well as the harmful assertion it is a "life-style choice" mean that it is hugely under-diagnosed despite affecting 5% of the population. Indeed these problems are more often seen by the fire-service, housing associations and the animal rescue charities for animal hoarding.
In this session we will describe the conditions in which hoarding is found, as well as a full description of hoarding disorder and the overlap of this with Autism, OCPD, ADHD and other conditions.
Although research in this area has been scanty on the past, this is starting to change with exciting new developments in the areas of psychopharmacology, as well as psychological therapies.
This session will examine the concept of hoarding as well as look at new research and the treatment of hoarding problems. Individuals with lived experience of the condition will also be present.
