The last decade has seen burgeoning interest in the mental health of sportsmen and women. This is reflected in an increasing body of research and better mental healthcare for athletes.

Although the interface between physical and mental health is a neglected area, improved approaches to the mental health of injured athletes are welcome.

Fatigue syndromes are another area where physical and mental health intersect, and it may be unhelpful (for the athlete) to consider one without the other.

This module presents a framework for understanding and addressing the health needs of athletes whose central concern is fatigue leading to underperformance.

Learning objectives

By the end of this module, you should be able to:

  • define overtraining syndrome (OTS) and identify how it might present
  • undertake an assessment of the overtrained and fatigued athlete
  • develop a management plan with interventions that support recovery and return to play.
Section headings

Section 1: Training and overtraining

Section 2: Assessment of the overtrained athlete

Section 3: Management and return to sport
