This online event is dedicated to exploring the multifaceted nature of the menopause and its impact on mental health. Adopting a holistic approach, it aims to deepen our understanding of the menopause as both a significant psychological milestone, a biological transition, and a time of potential new-onset and relapse in severe mental illness whilst also highlighting the societal shifts that accompany it.

Menopause is a crucial phase for all psychiatrists to understand as it’s a key developmental transition, hormonally and psychologically, which involves complex biopsychosocial changes and can trigger significant mental health challenges. Psychiatrists must be knowledgeable about menopause to better identify and treat related mental health issues, improving outcomes and quality of life for women.

The event will review the current psychiatric understanding of menopause, share lived experiences, and present up-to-date research and evidence. Through comprehensive exploration, the event aspires to foster nuanced conversations about menopause, including debates on its medicalisation and the diverse experiences of those undergoing it.

Learning objectives:

1. Comprehensive understanding of menopause and its impacts: to cultivate a deep understanding of the menopause, focusing on its biological, psychological, and social aspects. This objective aims to inform psychiatrists about the multifaceted nature of menopause, including how it affects mental health and suicidality and what psychiatrists need to know to support their patients effectively.

2. Up-to-date research and evidence: to present the latest research and evidence regarding the impact of menopause on mental health, offering insights into contemporary psychiatric practice and care.

3. Examining perspectives on medicalisation: to stimulate discussion on the nature of menopause, exploring diverse viewpoints concerning its medicalisation and pondering the question of whether it is over-medicalised.

4. Support and treatment options: to explore various support systems and treatment options for managing symptoms of menopause and mental health conditions associated with menopause. This includes integrating psychological and social considerations to promote overall well-being.

5. Challenging societal stigmas: to confront and challenge societal stigmas and misconceptions surrounding menopause, promoting a narrative that respects and values the experiences of postmenopausal women.

6. Facilitating open discussion: to encourage open, thoughtful engagement and discussion on menopause among psychiatric professionals, fostering an environment where the complexity and diversity of experiences are acknowledged and respected.
