In this module you will learn about mindfulness and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT). MBCT is a group-based intervention that combines training in mindfulness meditation with elements of cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT). It is recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) as a relapse prevention intervention for individuals with recurrent depression.

We hope that you will engage with this module at an experiential level, and so have included some brief guided meditation practices to give you a 'taste' and a 'feel' of mindfulness. Please bring your personal self as well as your professional self to this module, and your body as well as your mind.

We recommend you work through the module in a quiet place and at a time when you will not be interrupted. If at all possible, try to make sure you have enough time to complete the module in one sitting without needing to rush. If you are not in the right place or mood to do this, it might be more useful to go through the module at another time.

This module is fairly specific to MBCT and its use in depression. The CPD eLearning module An introduction to mindfulness looks at the applications of mindfulness in other clinical and non-clinical areas.
