This session will explore the use of neuromodulation in psychiatric treatment. Dr Nolan Williams, Director of the Interventional Psychiatry Brain Stimulation Laboratory at the Stanford University Medical Centre, will talk about his research into treating major depressive disorder (MDD) using carefully targeted intensive transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) treatment. This uses fMRI localisation of the treatment target. The treatment is known as Stanford Neuromodulation Therapy (SNT). It has recently gained FDA approval for treating MDD. Dr Williams research has used fMRI findings to predict who would best respond to treatment of depression.

Dr Himanshu Tyagi from the Priory North London Hospital and from the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, will talk about the use of deep brain stimulation (DBS) to treat OCD.

Dr Agnieszka Klimowicz is a perinatal psychiatrist at the Camden and Islington Mental Health Trust and will talk about the use of TMS for treating depression in pregnant and lactating women. This is a treatment that does not have any systemic effects.

In this session you will explore:

- The use of neuromodulation in psychiatry.

- Deep brain stimulation in treating OCD.

- Transcranial magnetic stimulation in treating major depressive disorder.

- Transcranial magnetic stimulation in treating pregnant and lactating women.

- Neurobiology of depression and OCD.

- Neurosignalling changes involved in depression and in response to treatment.
