In this session Professor Prathiba Chitsabesan, CD for children and young people’s mental health at NHSE will set the scene in terms of prevalence of mental health conditions in CYP, the increase in the referrals to services, the expansion of the workforce and the place of psychiatrists within this. She will then talk about some developments and proposals for how the different mental health needs of CYP can be met within their local areas and from regional/national services.
Professor Helen Bould, Associate Professor at the University of Bristol will speak about the recently published STADIA trial which gives information about the use of structured diagnostic questionnaires to measure emotional disorders in CYP, the pathway after referrals to specialist CAMHS, the use of diagnosis and follow up data for 18 months. This was conducted across England and studied over 1200 CYP.
Dr Faraz Mughal, GP and NIHR Doctoral Fellow and Honorary Secretary, RCGP Adolescent Health Group will present research about young people presenting with self-harm in primary care and will also discuss how GP’s can be better supported to care for CYP with mental health presentations through closer working with specialist CAMHS.
Professor Alka Ahuja will speak in her role as a clinical and academic child and adolescent psychiatrist and Chair of the RCPsych in Wales about innovations in CYP’s mental health in Wales.
