Overview

High level survey data from NHS-England, WRES, NHS staff surveys, GMC and the RCPsych reveal persistently high levels of racism experienced by minoritised ethnic staff including doctors. This has remained unchanged despite previous initiatives. Racism may be individually mediated or structural and systemic in nature. It has a toxic impact on staff well-being and retention and adversely affects patient care. RCPsych has recently published comprehensive guidance (Tackling Racism in the Workplace) on addressing racism in the workplace through focused actions at the systemic, organisational and individual levels.

This session will describe the 15 effective actions grouped into six domains, and how to achieve transformational change. The masterclass participants will understand the evidence base of these actions; learn about the stepwise guide to implementing these actions to tackle racism in each organisation and; learn how to use data effectively to measure progress. The guidance provides organisations with a ‘Maturity Matrix’ to chart the progress incrementally, and address barriers. Importantly this guidance will help individuals who are impacted by racism at workplace to take appropriate actions, seek support. All managers and clinicians have a role to play in preventing and mitigating racism, by adopting specific measures including allyship actions. A range of resources are now available through the RCPsych Tackling Racism in the Workplace portal and through the support provided.

Addressing racism is vital for workforce wellbeing as well as for retention of our workforce. It is not only an ethical or moral imperative, but is absolute business critical to any organisation. With over 120,000 vacancies in the NHS and with SAS doctors and International Medical Graduates making up an increasing proportion of new psychiatrists, these actions must be expedited. This session will enhance the learning and competencies for psychiatrists of all levels of seniority to tackle racism.
