This module will focus on human development in the context of family relationships. We will consider:

  • Bowlby’s revolutionary attachment theory and its significance in emotional development, regulation of affect and key relationships in childhood, as well as the impact of these throughout life into adulthood
  • how difficulties from the very beginning of life can impact on psychiatric presentations we see in our patients
  • the conditions required for secure attachment, the subtypes and clinical relevance of insecure attachments as well as stability of attachment
  • other important elements of family relationships and parenting styles.
